Gems are items that appear in throughout the dungeon in the form of colorful cut gemstones. Unless identified, their particular use or value remain hidden.

Gems Types[]

Unidentified gems will have a specified color. Each gem colour has 3 different types:

  1. A magical gem, identified when dropped;
  2. A precious gem, which may be sold at a high price; and
  3. A worthless gem.

Identifying[]

There are several ways to identify a gem:

  • All gems can be identified by a spell of identify or reading a scroll of identify;
  • All gems can be identified by the jeweller in the Gnome mines or by shopkeeper with two stalls;
  • Magical gems can be identified simply by dropping (or throwing) them;
  • Magical gems can also be identified by binding them to a staff and using said staff, though results may be quite surprising;
  • Worthless pieces of glass can be identified by binding them to a staff and using said staff, though results may be quite damaging.

Binding a Gem[]

Binding a gem to a staff increases the number of charges a staff can hold (up to 8). All staves can bind a gem, with the exception of the wooden staff.

  • Amber - 2 charges;
  • Emerald - 4 charges;
  • Amethyst - 5 charges;
  • Sapphire - 6 charges;
  • Ruby - 7 charges;
  • Diamond - 8 charges.

Notes

  • Once a gem is bound to a staff, it can only bind one spell. To change the spell, the gem must be removed from the staff and is destroyed in the process.
  • Binding magical gems to a staff may have interesting results.
  • Binding worthless pieces of glass to a staff will shatter it when used and damage the player.

Tips[]

  • Identified precious gems will fetch a high price at the jeweller or shopkeeper;
  • Useless pieces of glass has no value, but may be sold as long as they remain unidentified. Having a level 3 Commerce skill will render useless pieces of glass as unsellable. Though selling identified gems are by far more profitable than selling unidentified gems, hence selling unidentified gems is a useless strategem;
  • Useless pieces of glass can be fed as food to non-carnivore and non-herbivore pets;
  • Throwing gems at creatures does not result in damage.
